***An American Werewolf in Paris* (1997) is better

***An American Werewolf in Paris* (1997) is better than *An American Werewolf in London* (1981)** The original An American Werewolf in London felt way too melodramatic, claustrophobic, and that absurd nightmare scene completely threw me off. I watched it once and never cared to see it again. Probably the script was influenced by heavy drugs. This sequel gets everything right. It perfectly balances horror and comedy, adds some action, and involves the whole city of Paris. It is pure suspence and fun, and I rewatch it every single time it’s on TV.

**Staggeringly awful.** Fails to be scary. Fails to be amusing. Terrible acting. This comes across as a fan film made by a struggling theatre troupe manned by amateurs. This excitable bunch of talent free people decide it would be fun to _galavant_ around Paris wearing a phoney throat also. They are keen, I'll give them that but it's just that they are in a stinker of fan video proportions. The joy they take in appearing out of thin air with their torn throats reminded me of an episode of Randall and Hopkirk Deceased. Light and frothy - with no menace or air of unease present. Now you see him - now you don't! _This is pantomime stuff._ A disgrace to John Landis' classic this thing is. The whole production is cable movie quality. SYFY channel stuff, right here. If Landis were dead, he would be spinning in his grave. - Charles Dance

So what next? "An American Werewolf in Athens"?

OK, so I don't know why they decided to make another movie about a Yankee college student going to a European capital and becoming a lycanthrope. But still, "An American Werewolf in Paris" definitely has its moments. Some scenes were no doubt thrown in for comic relief, like "You can't just pop up and tell me what to do." I agree with a previous reviewer that people who slam this movie are comparing it too much to "An American Werewolf in London". Maybe there's a slight feeling of that one, but you have to take this one as something new - and rather campy - to really enjoy it. Tom Everett Scott and Julie Delpy do a pretty cool job. But either way, I think that I've had my fill of movies about US citizens becoming lycanthropes in the Old Continent. So what do YOU plan to do the next time that there's a full moon?
