An Affair To Remember" is the "colored" remake

"An Affair To Remember" is the "colored" remake of the 1939 classic "Love Affair". It stars Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr and it is directed by Leo McCarey. In it, we get to meet playboy Nickie Ferrante and singer Terry McKay on a transatlantic cruise. They enter into romance despite both being in a romantic relationship. They promise to meet each other 6 months after the cruise and you know how it ends at the final scene. No question that the movie tries to recapture the magic of the first film but I think that the stars did their best with their respective characters and the storyline. Also, I find the original lovers in the 1939 more likeable and more engaging rather that this remake although it definitely could stand on its own being considered a classic itself just like the original film.

First of all, Cary Grant may be one

First of all, Cary Grant may be one of the icons of romantic cinema, and Deborah Kerr one of its most beautiful stars. That being said, both are fine in this movie, even though they are probably miscast. Kerr has an accent that is not remotely Bostonian, and Grant doesn't appear all that French, either. That aside, the first half of this movie is fine, at least with our two stars. The rest of the "passengers" all appear to be in First Class while acting like they've never been on a cruise before, often engaging in sophomoric behavior. That would be enough of a problem with the plot, but the second half goes overboard (pardon the pun). First of all, pretty bizarre that Kerr's character would hide her accident - she is supposedly intelligent, so she would likely realize how poorly this would treat the love of her life. Putting that aside, the side shows, particularly with the "choir" and astonishingly advanced children's orchestra feels like like little more than filler; removing a great deal of this would've shortened the movie without taking away from it. While I still enjoyed the movie, being a fan of both leads, it could have been far better.

A great Cary Grant movie. Most of it

A great Cary Grant movie. Most of it took place on a boat. There was a lot of romance. They go to Europe. They revisit each other in New York. I enjoy this era of films.
