The master of a dorayaki pastry store hires a 76-year-old woman whose talents attract customers from all over. But she's hiding a troubling secret. Life's joys are found in the little details, and no matter what may be weighing you down, everyone loves a good pastry.
I just watched this movie for the first time today after coming across a mention of it on social media, and I have to say that it is one of the most heartwarming movies I have seen in a while. After seeing the movie and reading its Wikipedia entry, I realized that some details were either left unstated or were oblivious if looking at the film itself. For example, it was not explicitly mentioned that (SPOILER ALERT: Do not read beyond this point if you do not want to get spoiled by the movie's content) the male lead was actually in a depressive state and was taking the role of a dorayaki vendor following an incident that had him taking a huge sum of loan and thus had to work to pay off that loan from a loan shark. And yes, if it is not obvious, the very establishment where he works is that of the loan shark. But of course, nothing will probably beat reading the novel on which the film was based, as far as getting the full picture of the story. In the end, I heard that both the novel and the movie were great.
This movie was wrongly categorized as Action movie. It's not. It's a beautiful slice of life Drama with Kirin Kiki's best acting performance as a leper with a knack for making a delicious sweet bean paste.
