Utter drivel. 99% style, 1% substance. To quote Boots Riley, "Art is sometimes an excuse for, you know, someone farting in public. There's nothing wrong with farting in public, but I want a little more than that."

After Blue is an utterly mesmerising, surreal, psychedelic

After Blue is an utterly mesmerising, surreal, psychedelic experience. It's the type of thoroughly original, exquisite filmmaking that we rarely see these days. Those used to standard formulaic Hollywood fare will no doubt hate it. I was absolutely dazzled by it. Suspiria-esque psychedelic colours, stunning cinematography, pulsing 80s synth music, astonishing set design and acting. Cinema as true art is clearly alive and well in France, unlike America. Like nothing I've ever seen before. Highly recommended.

At several moments during this film, I wished

At several moments during this film, I wished I could switch off the English language subtitles, turn down the sound and just enjoy the gorgeous colours and surreal, fever-dream sets. The main characters (the androgynous Roxy, the strangely beautiful woman buried in the sand, the dour mother of Roxy, the pretentious "artist") are nicely varied and convincingly portrayed, but... the constant repetition of "Kate Bush" in the dialogue gets irritating after the first 20 times, the plot is merely incidental and it's a film that - like Victorian children in Britain - should be seen and not heard. Visually it's unique and beautiful. Just forget the words.
