Plot summary

A young lawyer from London, Mr. Ashton, and his best friend are hiking across Dartmoor. When he twists his ankle, Ashton is forced to seek help at a nearby farmhouse and stays there for a few days. Innocent beauty Megan David catches the attention of Ashton. He decides to stay longer, and he and Megan fall in love, much to the displeasure of Megan's aunt and her loutish son.

Great Britain made fantastic period drama from the

Great Britain made fantastic period drama from the 1970s all the way up to the later part of that century. This one, made in the late 1980s, is a great slice of a magnificent cake. I cry whenever I see the ending. The music, the acting and dramatisation of a novelette by John Galsworthy done to perfection.

One of my favorite lesser-known movies. The poster

One of my favorite lesser-known movies. The poster makes it look like a teen flick; it's not. It's a period romance, set in Edwardian England. A young gentleman is injured while hiking in Dartmoor, and while he recuperates at a farmhouse, he falls in love with a local village girl. Beautifully acted, beautifully photographed, with a haunting score. Everyone I know who has seen it is profoundly affected by it. If this one doesn't make you cry, you don't have an ounce of romance in you.

A staggeringly heart-wrenching movie. Was finally able to rewatch it on DVD, and it affected me for weeks afterwards, just as it did the first time I saw it in the cinema. In fact, I'm a little wary of watching it again because the emotional punch leaves you reeling. Films with similar themes, like 'The Remains of the Day ', lie in its shadows. Imogen Stubbs' performance as Megan is simply and literally unforgettable.
