It's a pretty average thriller all around, but

It's a pretty average thriller all around, but it's nice watching Rip Torn be a bastard. Other than that, I can't really think of anything noteworthy here. It's decent if you're looking for some suspense filler.

★★ (out of four) Several years ago I read the suspense novel by Mary Higgins Clark entitled "A Stranmger is Watching". I liked the book a lot. It moved fast and was very suspenseful. Anytime you see the movie version later it is bound to be a disappointment since you have already seen in your mind how you believe things ought to be. Still, I hope the film versions at least hold on to essence of its source material. Rip Torn plays Artie Taggart, a homicidal maniac. He abducts a young girl and a television reporter (Kate Mulgrew) and hold them hostage for ranson in the catacombs beneath Grand Central Station in New York City. It's a great plot, but I really felt that it loses much of its suspense this translation. Had I not read the book before, would I feel the same way? I like to think so. Fairly common-or-garden crime-thriller. Nothing new or really original. Performances are OK, but you feel they are just going through the motions.
