Plot summary

Prof. Joseph Elsner guides his protégé Frydryk Chopin through his formative years to early adulthood in Poland. The professor takes him to Paris, where he eventually comes under the wing and influence of novelist George Sand and rises to prominence in the music world, to the exclusion of his old friends and patriotic feelings towards Poland.

Very dated, historically inaccurate, hard to sit through

Very dated, historically inaccurate, hard to sit through now. I guess so many actors were in service by the end of WWII that it was hard to drum up 5 quality performances for Oscar. Aside from being a new heart throb, there is no reason Cornel Wilde deserved a nomination for his secondary role and merely OK performance. Nice music though.

Mixed feelings. I love the story of genius

Mixed feelings. I love the story of genius (Chopin) and especially the involvement of a second genius (Lizst). There is some wonderful music (although some Chopin, I must admit, I find forced). On the other hand it has the typical problem of old movies: weak acting, conspicuous dramatic devices. As interesting and inspiring as the story would be if there was truth to it, it is apparently all fiction - and I could feel that while watching. Slight thumbs down overall. 4.8 out of 10
