Plot summary

An orphaned boy named Tomás is adopted by Maire O’Donnell to live on a whimsical Irish isle filled with new friends, secret caves and a lost baby pup seal stranded on the coast. But when Maire's reluctant husband Alec refuses to accept Tomás as his own son, the boy drifts down a fateful path of adventure and self-discovery, illuminating how rainbows can shine around - and within - us all.

This doesn't tread new ground but it has

This doesn't tread new ground but it has a good sense of believable consistency. There's nothing outstanding about the film except there's very much a feel good factor and an attractiveness about the location and filming. From the perspective of the protagonist there's a mixture of brutal reality and discovery with some added fantasy scenes, but more importantly it's easy to fall in line behind him as his supporter. It has some resemblance to 'Ring of Bright Water' and for that at least it's worth watching. Bring a box of tissues as well as the family.

If your heart goes out for Irish seacoast settings, an orphan boy, and the death of his mother, lost feelings reclaimed by the end, with copious tears, this is a film for you!

Definitely a tear jerker for me. It's just magical, and resonates with you. Yes it can be syrupy sweet at times and heartbreakingly tragic at others, but it's also messy - just like life is. That is what makes it poignant and beautiful.
