A Serious Man is a difficult but rewarding

A Serious Man is a difficult but rewarding film about uncertainty, faith and the human need to find meaning in chaos. The Coen brothers follow Larry Gopnik, a man convinced that his life can be understood through logic, only to watch that order collapse through divorce, debt, family problems and moral confusion. What makes the film powerful is how it refuses to give him clear answers. The religious stories, cultural references and unresolved conversations do not solve his crisis. They deepen it, suggesting that life often resists explanation. Michael Stuhlbarg gives Larry a quiet desperation, making his confusion both comic and painfully human. The film may feel distant at first, especially because of its cultural specificity and unusual opening, but its final impact is strong. It leaves the viewer with a simple and unsettling idea: sometimes the only possible response is to accept the mystery.

Sanitised Philip Roth? only read half of one book. So. The Coen bros were my favourites growing up- swear by. I then... had to account for myself. Couldn't. Swear at. If I'm being serious, and it's a difficult thought to express... I view their work less as a completed work, more as their telling us how they've been doing, suffused with what they've been reading; aaaand. I just find the contempt a bit stifling, sorry. Oeuvre. Making crime novels into film- Dashiell Hammet (Glass Key/ Miller's Crossing), Raymond Chandler (Long Goodbye/Big Lebowski), James M Cain (Postman always.../Man who was not...) , ... Fargo, Blood Simple. Making novels ?- True Grit; No Country for Old Men. Inside Llelwyn Davis, O Brother. A serious man. Barton Fink. Trying to be funny / screwball ? comedy- and just about succeeding; Hudsucker Proxy , Raising Arizona. And failing miserably: The Ladykillers, Intolerable Cruelty, Burn After Reading.

Brilliant and darkly funny. A paen to a swelling and terrifying sense of the meaninglessness of life. In a way the Cohens are master theologians here.
