Plot summary

Walter Lee Younger is a young man struggling with his station in life. Sharing a tiny apartment with his wife, son, sister and mother, he seems like an imprisoned man. Until, that is, the family gets an unexpected financial windfall.

I've taught this play so many times, and

I've taught this play so many times, and I've watched this particular rendition so many times, and this cast is just... Sidney Poitier as Walter Lee Younger is the perfect Walter. The cadence with which he delivers some of his lines when he's frantic and manic is just spectacular. Ruby Dee as Ruth—her eyes are so expressive, and there's so much pain behind them, although I do love Audra McDonald's in the remake. It's just spoiled because they chose to have Sean Combs play the part.
