While not the perfect period for the end

While not the perfect period for the end of Robert Altman’s career, it’s pretty damn good. Fans of the radio show should love it, and fans of Altman (and I’m definitely one of them) will enjoy seeing the master doing what he does best with some of his long time collaborators.

From its opening moments, Altman's final outing is imbued with a mordant sorrow, for all its surface humour. Garrison Keillor's long-running radio show is coming to an end, a final live broadcast a last hurrah before the theatre itself is pulled down. Everything here is a metaphor, not least the enigmatic white-coated blonde (Virginia Madsen) who first appears to Kevin Kline's brilliantly clumsy Gary Noir, and finally seems to target all the others - including GK himself, Lily Tomlin, and Meryl Streep (the one false note in Altman's ensemble). The camera glides and floats, the music plays, the lights go out on an astonishing career. Wings of Desire meets Nashville.

This Night Hawkish slow-paced, brilliantly starting comedy about the delight and misery of acting, completely falls apart towards the end. And this is a pity as all the stars are great, particularly the leading man, Garrison Keillor.
