Plot summary

In turn-of-the-century Budapest, teenage gangs the Paul Street Boys and the Red Shirts have been skirmishing over a vacant lot. When the Red Shirts decide to drive the Paul Street Boys out, they appoint small, sickly Nemescek to spy on their opponents.

Contrary to the opinion of the critic review

Contrary to the opinion of the critic review so far here, this movie was not boring for me. Of course, it shouldn't be compared to today's American action movies in this regard. I had read the novel before I saw the movie, it was a great favorite reading of my youth (and it is still today) and since I am Hungarian, I have a better understanding of what it is about. In any case, the movie follows the plot of the novel surprisingly authentically, the locations are also very authentic, they take place in the same district as the plot of the book - Budapest 8th district, Józsefváros (Joseph city) - although the "grund" (the boy's playground) no longer existed at the time the movie was made because, as it turned out at the end of the movie, a large tenement house was built on it shortly after the battle for it, which is still standing there today. Foreign child actors are phenomenal, especially Anthony Kemp in the role of the tragically destined Ernő Nemecsek. I recommend the film to those who are sensitive to underlying contents such as courage, honor, righteousness, friendship.

An Absolute Masterpiece

Remember when you were a child and you and your friends engaged in a mock war? Remember how, just like real war, it seemed to get out of hand all too quickly? Well, that's what happens to the pre-adolescent and early-adolescent boys in this modern Hungarian classic, one of the best movies you (probably) never heard of. I don't want to say much more about the plot, but the ending will tear your heart out. I can hardly imagine a more profoundly antiwar statement. Masterfully written, directed and acted by all involved. This film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Film, and quite possibly deserved to win. Should be available on video but apparently isn't; if it were not for late-night TV, how would we ever get to see jewels like this in the USA?
