Plot summary

Annabel, a young woman who risks being ostracized from an insular New York clique led by her socialite best friend when she falls for charming photographer Theo. Grappling with the sudden loss of her father, Annabel finds herself torn between the comfortable opulence of her upper crust circle and the vibrant ambitions of the artists downtown. As Theo introduces her to unexplored sides of the city and of herself, how far will Annabel push out of her gilded cage?

A beautifully told story about the present day

A beautifully told story about the present day heirs to Edith Wharton’s New York Gilded Age. There is everything to love about this movie the music, the photography, which is stunning. Gorgeous photography of NYC looking its best. The movie also was reminiscent for me of Whit Stillmans Metropolitan (one of my top favorite directors of all time and I learned about it through his social media comment of his cameo). There was even a new acronym PLU people like us much like Metropolitan urban haute bourgeois UHB. Was rooting for Annabel all the way . But I was worried she would catch cold in the final scene. So glad this film was made and wish there were more like this.

Beautifully crafted film about a boorish upper-class clique controlling one of their members' love for a lowly photographer. Showing how friends can manipulate people when following their hearts makes more sense. Lovely photography, good acting from most and great acting from the lead

For those who love _Metropolitan_ and Carolyn Farina

Is _A New York Story_ worth watching? Well, would you watch the film just to catch a glimpse of Carolyn Farina, and swoon over that distinctive voice, 35 years after _Metropolitan_? Of course you would. She has one long cameo scene as an overbearing mother, with her _Metropolitan_ director Whit Stillman playing her resigned husband.She is amazing in it.The rest of the film, a sort of _Haute Urban Bourgeoise: the Next Generation_, isn't great. It is sort of a vanity project, directed by and starring Fiona Robert who also co-writes with her (sister?) Sophia Robert. The film takes minimal risks; the wealthy clique is ultra-wealthy this time, not just bourgeois, and represents evil corporations. The boyfriend is picture perfect (artist, philosopher, mellow personality), not the Edward Clements in _Metropolitan_ who disagrees with everyone about everything. There isn't even a Chris Eigeman character with an oversized persona to move things along. But the New York night scenes and references to obscure paintings at he Metropolitan Museum are nice. So stream it and get ready to pine for Audrey Rouget all over again.
