Plot summary

In 1960s Los Angeles an energetic widow and her six children try to make a dream of theirs come true: to have a home of their own. They leave L.A. and head for the countryside, all the while facing numerous difficulties and obstacles during their journey.

I tend to judge a movie based on

I tend to judge a movie based on how I feel when it is over. This movie left me feeling both optimistic and in awe of this family. It is a classic feel good movie. The characters do evolve for the better. I was completely surprised and pleased when her boss makes a surprisingly prescient decision. When the town comes together to help this family on the mother's terms and allows her to maintain her stubborn dignity, I was left feeling totally gratified that I took the time to watch it.

Reality is often not pretty. And while that

Reality is often not pretty. And while that is certainly the case with the Lacey tribe it is a story that needs to be told. And the movie portrays life for many poor and low income families. And the more we can see and understand the challenges and struggles our neighbors experience the more we see reality. Then we can begin to see the experiences of others. And if we are willing to try to put ourselves in the shoes of others the more loving and humane we shall become. The movie portrayed real people. Not always with the best vocabulary as I would like to see in a movie but probably the reality that family was exposed to. Many may choose not to watch such a movie as they may only be able to cope with happy movies. But for those that can face the real world and have empathy for the people in it such understanding can make things a little bit better for us all…
