I would respectfully disagree with those that are saying this is the better cut. There is extremely important context removed from the first act in this version that changes the entire film. Demand better.
The much more compact, 2-hour version is better than the two extended versions IMHO. I don't think the director's cut adds anything to the overall impact of the film, and in some cases takes away from it, such as with the totally unnecessary "skeletons and cobwebs" scene. Overall, one of my favorite films of all time.
Another overrated Flick. Trust Stephen King and watch his 1997 mini series he made to make up for this movie (that he hates). Yes this is a classic (but just because it's a classic doesn't make it good) but it pretty much throws out the concept of the book to make a much less entertaining (and incredibly slow burn) story. With Jack Nicholson being a terrible casting choice, the removal of the focus on the hotel being haunted, the dramatic change that Jack actually doesn't care for his family VS in the book he is a wholesome kind loving family man. Basically, this movie makes out Jack to be the opposite of in the book and also puts the descent into madness more into Jack being responsible instead of an entity at the hotel. It's ok I guess if you like a slow burn and don't know anything about the original story? But to be honest I was a Stephen king fan when I was a kid (IT sold me!), and when I started to branch out with his movies, when I first saw this, as a kid who loved horror, I still didn't care for it, and that was without reading the book first. It wasn't until years later I learned of the differences and the mini series that let me give the story another chance. Trust. Just watch the mini series.
I know its a classic. I hated the film from start to finish. The book was awesome. That said, the performances were fantastic, and it is worth watching just for that.
This movie is one of the greatest horror movies that I have seen in the history of world cinema and it surpasses many of the famous movies.. It simulates loneliness everywhere from all people, even the people closest to you... loneliness or a sense of fear and lack of understanding for your mother, father or you personally. Your mind sends you to another world, a strange and lonely world, even for those closest to you... There is an audience who loves this feeling ... because it is really close to it ... and this film simulates this interesting topic for some audiences ... and it is rare for horror writers to touch upon this feeling and this topic ... although it has a wide audience who loves it ... and I see The actors, director, and storyteller did a job worthy of this topic as they should, and they also excelled in it.
I prefer the longer US version, but the European cut (20 minutes shorter) is unquestionably the better film. It's just way more intense when you remove the fluff.
If you are bored by this movie, thats fine. Know, though, that this is considered one of the greatest films, almost a class on tension, isolation, and the oldest question - Do we all have inside of us the ability to become a killer, does it take one bad day to show us this?

The extended US cut was taylored to pander to stupid american audiences. The european cut is infinitely superior.
